Common Reasons Your Roof May Be Leaking

You take your roof for granted. Everyone does – until a problem shows up: a leak, a clog, or visible damage. You may have wild animals in your attic, and you’re not sure how they got in. If you’re experiencing leaks or animal incursions, there are several common reasons that may be behind the problem.

Problems with Your Gutters

Your gutters are there for a purpose: to catch rainwater when it falls on your roof and redirects it so it doesn’t damage your home or your foundation. But while gutters are designed to collect rainwater, they also collect other things, such as leaves, dirt and dust, acorns, and other detritus. If your gutters are clogged, they may be ineffective in serving the purpose they were designed for: protecting your home. Clogged gutters may be causing water to accumulate on your roof, which can cause damage over time as a result of wood rot.

The good news is that clogged gutters are an easy fix. Inspect your gutters visually, and you may be able to see if they are clogged. (Then again, you may not be able to see it from the ground.) If you’re not comfortable on ladders, it’s a good idea to have a professional inspect and clean your gutters regularly. (Late fall is a good time to have this done after the autumn leaves have fallen.)

Holes and Punctures

Actual breaches of your roof can happen without your notice. It may be a small breach that has widened over time, or it may be a sudden hole caused by a branch falling on the roof (or one nibbled by a critter!). In any case, if you notice leaking, it’s time to inspect the attic to see where the leak is originating from. Look for water damage in the attic or detritus on the attic floor or walls.

Missing Shingles or Roof Tiles

This is one of the most common causes of roof leaks. Whatever material forms the roof of your home, these materials can age, crack, dry out and blow off in a heavy wind. When this happens, it allows water to penetrate the roof’s underlayment. If it’s been a while since your roof was inspected, consult with a professional roofing services company. They can repair any damaged spots or replace the entire roof if it’s warranted.

An Improperly Installed Roof

Not every roofing job is perfect, and if you’re experiencing leaks, it may mean that the roof was installed poorly, leaving gaps. These gaps in the flashing are particularly common around openings such as vents, chimneys, and roof windows.
